Wicked Summary, Act 1, Part 2
Act I, Part 2.
After the dance, Elphaba and Galinda are in their room. They decide to share secrets. Galinda says she and Fiyero are going to be married, and when Elphaba expresses surprise that he asked her already, the other girl says Fiyero doesn't know yet. Then she presses Elphaba to share her own secret, but Elphaba is nervous, so Galinda grabs a green bottle from under her roomie's pillow. Elphaba freaks, saying it was her mother's. Elphaba then goes on to explain that her father hates her, and explaining that it's her fault that her mother died and that's why her father hates her. When her mother was pregnant with Nessa, her father made her eat milkflowers so Nessarose wouldn't be green--hoping that the flowers would dye her skin white. But it just made their mother sick, so Nessa came early and her legs were all twisted and her mother died. Galinda says the following:
"But that was the milkflowers fault, not yours. That may be your secret, Elphaba, but that doesn't make it true."
She then comments that it's the next morning.
Galinda decides to make Elphaba popular, and Elphie decides she doesn't want to be. Galinda explains a lot of things about popularity, including that you need to be popular to accomplish things. She beautifies her friend and teaches her to hairflip. Elphaba feels ridiculous, and when Galinda comments on how beautiful she is now that she's been a tiny bit beautified, Elphaba, flustered, leaves.
The next day, in Dillamond's class, Elphaba is practicing her hairtoss and accidentally tosses it into Fiyero's face. The two talk and are getting oddly along until Dillamond comes in and says that animals are no longer allowed to teach. He's dragged off, and a man comes in to teach them about cages. There's a little lion cub in it. When the cub begins to fuss, he puts the curtain over it and prepares to give it a sedative. Elph loses control of her powers and makes everyone but Fiyero dance. The two then grab the cub and run away, out to the grounds. There, they argue and Elphaba comments that he didn't have to do that. They talk some more, obviously showing attraction, and then he runs off to let the cub go somewhere safe.
Meanwhile, as it begins to rain, Elphaba laments that she loves Fiyero, but he's already chosen Galinda. And really, why would he choose her instead. She continues to lament, and Morrible finds her, distressing that she could get wet. She hands Elphaba an umbrella, then remembers she can control weather, so she clears it up. She then goes on to say that Elphaba's received word from Oz. She is to leave at once to go see the Wizard. He truly wants to meet her!
A few days later, at the train station, Galinda laments to her friend that Fiyero's become distant and is thinking. He meets them there and gives Elphaba a bouquet. As the two talk about the animals, suddenly Galinda cuts in and makes a speech about how she will henceforth be known as Glinda in a show of solidarity. When Fiyero leaves, she states she doesn't know what came over her, but she insists to be called Glinda now. Elphaba then says Glinda should go with her. The two go to the Emerald City together.
The two arrive and are virtually welcomed. Elphaba is, for once, not treated differently. The two girls go around town and wait to be seen by the Wizard. They get new clothes, Elphaba wearing the black hat that Glinda gave her. They work their way through town, and go to Wizomania, a play. After the play, they enjoy themselves more until they're called to the Wizard. They arrive, and are confronted by a machine that speaks loudly and is terrifying. However, as they begin to grovel, it pauses.
An old man steps out and apologizes, and says that it can be hard to see in the contraption. But, hey, it's what people expect. He welcomes Elphaba and says he's heard so much about her. Soon after, Morrible arrives, his new press secretary. When Elphaba asks why she's there...
The Wizard explains he's a sentimental man who really only ever wanted to be a father, so he tries to treat all of the Ozians as his children. That's why he wanted to elevate Elphaba--because "everyone deserves a chance to fly." They bring her a magic book, and ask her to help. His monkey servant was always watching the birds fly, and oh, couldn't you help him fly, too? Just a simple spell!
So she reads the spell, but it goes wrong. Instead of simply allowing him to levitate, he sprouts wings. The Wizard and Morrible are delighted, though Elphaba is horrified as the transformation hurt him. Then, the Wizard raises a wall, revealing a cage with many more monkeys. He and Morrible go on about how they'd be excellent spies. When Elphaba begins to catch on, the lower it to just scouts. But then it's revealed he's behind the loss of animal rights, and that he has no real power. As they try to placate her, she goes along--then takes off with the book and Glinda right behind. They decide to make her a fugitive, because they can't have her revealing the wrongs and they need people not to trust her.
Elphaba and Glinda hide in a room, and begin to talk.
The two fight at first, until an announcement comes on from Morrible. She says terrible things, calling Elphaba wicked. Glinda pleads with Elphie to please, just apologize. They can fix this! Elphie can still have what she wanted. But realizing the cost, Elphaba says she can't, and goes on to say that she's tired of limits other people place on her. So she's going to defy gravity itself, and begins to enchant from the book. Glinda, upset, says she can't do it, she's having delusions of grandeur, where are her wings? And then she realizes a nearby broom has levitated. Elphaba takes it and sings more about how she's going to defy gravity. Then, she asks Glinda to come with her.
She describes how they can be unlimited together, no one will ever bring them down. At first, Glinda is tempted, but realizing she'd just weigh her friend down, she decides not to go. So they say their good-byes, and then the guards break in. As they grab Glinda, Elphaba tells them she has nothing to do with this, and then goes on to sing more. She takes off on her broomstick, saying that if they want to find her, look to the western skies. She then says to take a letter back to those who would hold her back--she's defying gravity! And they will never bring her down!
Glinda yells after her, "I hope you're happy!" while below the people call Elphaba wicked and say they must bring her down. The first act ends with Elphaba on a hopeful note, feeling free for the very first time.
